When we rented the house, I was given a garage door opener and a Ziploc bag full of keys. Apparently I was supposed to try all the keys until I found the key to the front door. After trying fifty-seven keys, I finally gave up and used the garage door opener to get in and out of the house. I had a bag of keys, but none of them unlocked the front door.
We often take our keys for granted. They start cars, open gates and unlock safes. We used to laugh when people had a lot of keys because they had to carry a heavy load of metal around, but not anymore. The information age has changed the kind of keys we carry. Now our brains are loaded with password keys. Without passwords most of us wouldn’t be able to access our money, healthcare and social networking. These information keys allow us to manage our lives. In the information age, information is a key.
People have been confused about God for centuries. While the Old Testament says to take an eye for an eye, Jesus says to turn the other cheek. Such discrepancies have caused people to wonder if Jesus and the Old Testament God are in agreement. When God seems difficult to understand, many of us give up and ignore him. But what if there was a key to unlock all the confusion and mystery about God? What if there is a secret password to understanding the Bible?
I believe there is a key and his name is Jesus. Jesus seemed to be calling himself a key when he said–
I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.
- John 14:6
Jesus is promising to unlock our misunderstandings about God, he says he is the gate to heaven. Without Jesus, the Old Testament God seems cruel at times. Unless we view such events through the key of Jesus’s love, we won’t understand God’s actions. Rather than ignore the parts of scripture that baffle us, we can discover more and more secrets about God as we view his character through the life of Jesus.
Jesus is the only and unique key, because only Jesus is God in human flesh–
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…
Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made.
The next time you feel scared of the Old Testament God, think about Jesus. Do you see Jesus killing people because they don’t agree with him? This same Jesus is the God of the Old Testament. When the Old Testament credits God with horrible and bizarre events, there must be a really good reason for it. When we know how Jesus treats people and we realize God treats people just like Jesus does, we can be sure there is more to the story. Let’s use Jesus as the key to unlock our fears about God.
Jesus is the key. Jesus is the bridge between people and God. Only Jesus is both human and God. Jesus is the only key.
In this way they will know God’s secret,
which is Christ himself.
He is the key that opens
all the hidden treasures of
God’s wisdom and knowledge.
How is Jesus unlocking your confusion about God?
